An artistic life shaped by heritage and place.
I’m Ovvian Castrillo Hill, a Filipino-Canadian sculptor and visual artist based in Fort St. John, British Columbia.
Growing up within the artistic legacy of my father, the late Eduardo Castrillo, gave me an early understanding of sculpture as a language capable of carrying history, emotion, culture, and ideas. Since beginning professionally in 2003, I have continued to develop a voice of my own across the Philippines and Canada.

My Story
Heritage is a foundation,
not a boundary.
My sculptures explore movement, rhythm, strength, softness, relationships, culture, and the emotional experiences that connect us. Moving to northern British Columbia changed my practice: my artistic heritage came with me, and Canada gave me another landscape in which to explore it.
Whether a work is intimate or monumental, permanent or temporary, I want it to create a moment of connection between the artwork, the place, and the person standing before it.

My Story
Artist. Designer. Sculptor. Filipino-Canadian.
My creative journey stretches across countries, generations, materials, and communities—but at its centre has always been a belief in the power of art to tell the human story.
Where It Began
Growing Up With Art
Art was never distant from my life. I grew up surrounded by the creative world of my father, the late Eduardo Castrillo, one of the Philippines’ renowned sculptors. The studio was a place of work, experimentation, discipline, problem-solving, and imagination. Watching that process taught me what it takes to transform an idea into something physical and enduring.
In 2003, I began sculpting under my father’s mentorship. That experience gave me a strong foundation while beginning the longer process of discovering what my own work needed to say.
Finding My Own Artistic Language
Heritage Is a Foundation, Not a Boundary
The influence of my father is part of my work, but every artist eventually has to develop a language of their own. My sculptures explore movement, rhythm, strength, softness, relationships, culture, and the emotional experiences that connect us.
Family, hard work, resilience, identity, community, belonging, and purpose are recurring sources of inspiration. I am interested in the stories people carry and in finding ways to make those stories visible.
From the Philippines to Canada
A Practice Transformed by Place
Moving to northern British Columbia changed my artistic practice. Different environments, available materials, working spaces, climates, communities, and opportunities encouraged me to rethink how I created.
Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I had done before, I began allowing the new environment to change the work. My artistic heritage came with me. Canada gave me another landscape in which to explore it.
Creative Philosophy
Why I Create
I create because art can make an idea tangible. It can honour someone, celebrate a community, preserve a memory, change the character of a space, and sometimes express what words cannot.
My goal is to create work that carries meaning while remaining visually powerful—art that invites people to experience movement, emotion, culture, and connection through form.
